Thinking of travelling to Nigeria soon? Depending on how you plan to travel, visiting Nigerian can be expensive or moderately affordable.  To help you get you started, we’ve put together a handy checklist to make sure you’ve got everything covered.

Start With a Plan

To get started, you need to come up with a plan. There are several factors you should consider such as how long you want to stay, what to do, where to visit, etc. Early and proper planning will ensure that you have a memorable trip and don’t break the bank while doing that. For example, when and where do you plan to visit in Nigeria? How long will your trip last? Meals, forms of transportation, security, etc. are other things to consider.

Your plan could look something like this:

  • Preparing for the trip: What do you need to do to get ready e.g. what vaccinations, visas, money, etc. are required?

  • Traveling to Nigeria: How do you get to Nigeria - affordably and safely.

  • Where to stay - What type of accommodation is preferred – low budget or high end?

  • How to move around:  How do you get from one place to another while in Nigeria.

  • Where to visit: What are some interesting attractions or destinations in Nigeria.

  • What to do: What are some interesting place to visit?

Getting Ready:

Visas: Foreign nationals who are not citizens of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) need to apply for a visa to enter Nigeria.  Visas can be obtained at Nigerian embassies, high commissions and consulates worldwide. You can find a list here or you can use a visa service

A valid passport with more than 6 months to the expiration date is required to get a Visa. If you need a passport or your passport is due to expire shortly, you can renew your passport at a Post office (USA) or use a passport service

Yellow fever vaccinations are also required for a visa requirement and you may be denied entry if you cannot present a yellow fever vaccination form as proof.

Traveling to Nigeria

There are different flight options that you can consider for lfights to Nigeria. Most international airlines have flights to Nigeria. British Airways, Delta Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, Kenyan Airlines are some airlines that offer flights to Nigeria.  You can book flights to Nigerian directly with the airlines or you can get cheap flight tickets from travel agencies such as ASAP Tickets.

International airports are located in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt and Enugu. The Lagos domestic and international terminals are located a few miles apart and transferring between the two terminals can be time consuming so plan accordingly if you are connecting to a local flight.

Accommodation

Choices for accommodation in Nigerian range from hotels, staying with friends, and some limited AirBnB options. Hotel room rates range from the equivalent of aboubudget to expensive and price is not necessarily a determinant of quality or service. You can pay a lot for a hotel room and get poor service. Also, security and accessibility should be considered when choosing a hotel. Some international hotel brands are currently in Nigeria such as Sheraton, Radisson Blue, Hilton, Best Western, etc.  You can get find and book hotels in Nigeria here

Transportation

Moving around in Nigeria can be quite cumbersome. Air travel can be infrequent and subject to delays and cancellations and travel by road can be challenging as the roads, especially outside of Abuja and Lagos, are not in good shape. There are different means of moving around in most of the major cities in Nigeria.

You can rent a car (with a driver), use taxis or buses. Intra-city travel with buses can be very rough and are not recommended for the non-Nigerian traveller. Ride share services are becoming more prevalent with providers like Uber, Hello Taxi, etc. now popular in major cities like Abuja and Lagos. These can be more comfortable than regular taxis and are a bit more secure alternatives. .
